Field Trip: Connemara:  the Carl Sandburg Home

Initial meeting time and rendezvous point: Connemara parking lot, 7:00 am. Second meeting time and rendezvous point: Connemara parking lot, 9:00 am.

Driving Time from Asheville: Approximately forty-five minutes to one hour.

Field Trip Leader: Everette Robinson cell phone day of trip 828-545-1369 erobinsonphoto@charter.net

There is no limitation on participants on this outing. Recommended equipment: Comfortable footwear and layered clothing for the variation in temperature as the morning progresses. Tripod, an assortment of lenses, and a polarizer. Description: Connemara can be enjoyed in three phases, making for one-hour, three-hour, and five-hour options.

Initially we will shoot the pond at Connemara’s entrance, taking advantage of magical early morning light. When the sun rises and the good light goes we will have two options: An easy walk visits the Sandburg house and neighboring goat farm. I will lead a moderate 2.8 mile round trip to the summit of Big Glassy Mountain. This walk was one of Sandburg’s favorites but is only for those in hiking shape. Difficulty: Pond-Easy. House and farm-0.35 mile one-way, moderately easy. Big Glassy summit-2.8-mile round trip-Moderate to moderately strenuous.

Directions: Take Exit 53 off of I-26, just south of Hendersonville. Turn right on Upward Road at the end of the exit ramp. Reach US 176 in 1 ½ miles and continue straight through the intersection. In another mile reach US 25 and turn left. Turn right on Little River Road just after passing the Flat Rock Playhouse. The parking area for Connemara is immediately on the left.

Duration: The trip will have one-hour, three-hour, and five-hour options. You can bring a lunch if you like, but even those going to Big Glassy should be out in enough time to enjoy lunch in nearby Hendersonville, should they prefer. I have been missing a lot of sleep lately, so I may or may not make the 7:00 meeting for the sunrise, depending on my rest between now and then; but I will definitely be there for the 9:00 meeting time. See you there!
