Milky Way Photo Shoot

Pounding Mill Overlook

Blue Ridge Parkway Milepost 413.2

Friday Night, July 13, 2018

Sunset is at 8:46 p.m.  Suggest arriving between 8:00 and 8:15 to focus and compose your shot prior to sunset.  The Milky Way should become visible between 9:30 and 10:00 after the sky has fully darkened.  Ken Smith will have a tip sheet so if you’ve never shot the Milky Way, don’t fret, this may be the opportunity to learn how great shooting this time of night can be.  The Milky Way will be visible for several hours so you may elect to shoot it and leave or bring your Intervalometer to create a time lapse video.  Drive time from Asheville about one hour but suggest allowing a little extra time for driving on the Parkway.  This photo op is contingent on clear skies so suggest you RSVP to Ken Smith at so he may alert you if cancelled.  If the skies are partly cloudy it add to the picture so don’t let a few clouds discourage you.  A wide angle lens, snacks and a lawn chair suggested, a tripod is mandatory.  As we will be at 4700′ elevation, suggest warm clothes and a jacket.  No facilities are on site.
